About Patris
Growing up in the Northwest corner of Montana, Patris was surrounded by the natural beauty of the landscape. However, instead of pursuing her art dreams, she entered a career in the education profession after moving to California. For several years, Patris juggled a part-time job as an educator and program consultant for the California Department of Education with time to create artwork. She remained dedicated to her artistic goals, and in 2004, she left the education profession to pursue her art full time.
She prefers to paint on location (en plein aire), following in the tradition of the Barbizon School and the Impressionists. Her work is described as “peaceful and positive” - qualities she attributes to a connection she feels with the Creator and the created matter she observes in front of her easel.
“Patris sees with her eyes, but paints with her heart.”
Patris has recently been juried into several national plein air painting competitions and paint outs. Her work is found in many private and public collections. She was appointed by the mayor to serve as a commissioner with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission from 2002 - 2008, is co chair of the California Art Club Sacramento Chapter and the Sacramento Plein Air Painters,
Her artistic path led her to open her own studio, gallery and art center near downtown Sacramento - the Patris Studio and Art Gallery. Patris teaches weekly drawing and painting classes, coordinates artist workshops, art exhibits, and other events. Artists from all over the county come to her studio gallery to draw and paint from live models, develop their skills with art instructors, and connect with other artists. In 2009, she spearheaded the 1st Annual Capitol Plein Air Festival, featuring over 40 artists who painted on location in and around Sacramento during October 11-16, 2009. In Patris’s spacious studio gallery, she features her artwork along with works by several other prominent artists in the region. From emerging to nationally known artists, a diverse range of level and skill are showcased at the Patris Studio and Art Gallery. The main theme that runs throughout the artwork is the artist’s pursuit of painting and drawing from life - whether figurative, still life, or en plein air.
