Aspen Grove plein air
from last autumn's plein air outing with artist buddies, Abigail VanCannon and Randy Blasquez,  The color was amazing and a painter's paradise in this aspen grove just outside of Truckee.

Delta Forever Exhibition

This painting is part of a group exhibition entitled "Delta Forever" and will be on exhibit at Shimo Gallery throught the month of June.  Greg Kondos' wife Moni has so graciously and tirelessly organized this beautiful show to bring awareness and attention to the fragile beauty of the Delta region and it's importance to our city, county, and state.

San Francisco Plein Air Trip

A little 6" x8" plein air painting I did during a San Francisco plein air painting trip with one of my dear artist buddies, Abigail VanCannon.

Plein Air Mendocino

Plein Air Painting in Mendocino.  I accompanied my good  friend and artist Victoria Brooks to help out with her workshop at the Mendocino Art Center and had the chance to do this quick study the day before the workshop.   I love painting over on the coast and Mendocino is absolutely charming.  Since it was a quick study and quite cloudy, I did a limited palette: ultramarine blue, quinacridone red, hansa yellow and white.

Donuts Anyone?

I got on this donut kick and started painting this donut series.  After painting them and looking at them as still life objects I have no desire to eat them myself.

Another composition. I like the idea of seeing how many different compositions I can make with 3 donuts in a square format.

Commissions from nearly a decade ago

I was over at UC Davis hospital yesterday and as soon as I stepped inside this building these two paintings caught my eye.  Lo and behold, and much to my surprise and delight,  these were my paintings from nearly a decade ago when I was commissioned to do these Colusa landmarks for a UC Davis clinic up in Colusa.  Maybe the Colusa clinic closed and these paintings were brought back to Sacramento for the new building which I had entered.

So here we are  back nearly 10 years ago.  I distinctly remember driving up to Colusa to photograph these buildings and the challenge it was because the Courthouse view was covered  in tree canopy.

Colusa High School, a very beautiful, very long horizontal brick structure.

Outdoor Still Life

A recent still life painting set up right outside the studio door.  I am really enjoying using the outdoor lighting situation for still life set ups.  I have to work very quickly and get as much done as possible before the light changes and the sun roasts me!  I finished this one up inside the studio..

3 hour conte study

3 hour head study today during our long pose session at Patris Studio and Art Gallery. We had a full house of artist friends working from the model today.  A fun art day.
I'll be teaching a portrait class at the Crocker Art Museum starting Wednesday.  There's still time to sign up! We'll be looking at the master drawings from the Crocker collection and then working in the studio from a live model.  Love, love, love this Crocker class!!

Quick study with the new Ceracolors

This is the little painting I did during the Paco Benitez Encaustic Workshop at my studio using a brand new product called Ceracolors.  I used 4 colors which we refer to as the Zorn palette--black, white, ochre, and an earth red. Actually, the Zorn palette originates from the ancient Greeks as we found out in our workshop.
I used the Ceracolors like acrylic paint. They have the richer look of oils, the flexibility to be used as encaustic paint, and the properties of acrylic paint in that they are water soluble and dry very quickly.

Lots of fun with this new paint product.  I'm looking forward to experimenting more with these paints and discovering more about their properties and application.
